David Harvey’s portraiture includes many celebrities, corporate executives, model and actor’s publicity portraits. Most of my subjects’ portraits were taken in my New Orleans photography studio and some like Governor Edwards and John Fogerty were shot on locations. John Fogerty was shot for Warner Bros., at the Saenger Theatre where he was performing; Edwin Edwards 'Suite Royale' was shot onboard the Steamboat Natchez, a befitting location since he’s wearing a period Riverboat Gambler costume. Edwards always poses serious, all of his campaign photos throughout the years reflect this, but I wanted to capture that great witty Edwin Edwards grin, and I got it! I hold Governor Edwin Edwards’ portrait at the top of the celebrities I have had sessions with. We both seemed to be acutely aware in 1990 that this was a unique (if not significant) portrait, present Edwards' Riverboat Licensing difficulties aside. I often light my portraits with a parabolic pan reflector, sometimes a small silvered umbrella. I typically use only one light on my subjects, but with Edwards, as with Scoot and Ginger Baker, I also set up a rear accent light to stream across the shadow side of the face adding character to the portrait.
